What are Pendulums For
Pendulums, also known as dowsing pendulums are used for several different purposes in magick and spirituality. They can be used to tapping into divine, ancestral and spirit communication, or for tapping into the subconscious. 
 
One of the main uses of a pendulum is to tap into the subconscious, allowing you to answer questions that your subconscious and psychic mind knows the answers to. Our bodies undertake micro-movements, these are controlled in part by the subconscious mind. When tapping into the subconscious and asking yourself questions, the body responds with regognisable micro-movements that are amplified by the weight of the pendulum. 
When working with deities, spirits and ancestors, they influence our micromovements in a similar way to spirit writing or spirit drawing, having an influence over us and in turn, altering the swing of a pendulum. 
 
Pendulums can be used for dowing as well, finding water and connecting with electromagetic energies. The can be used alone or with pendulum boards to receive answers.
 
How to Use
When you receive a new pendulum, it is best to cleanse and connect with it before use. You can cleanse a pendulum in many ways, the most popular is by using smoke. Connecting with the pendulum is done by spending time with it, often by keeping it under your pillow, by your bed or on an altar. 
 
Each pendulum has their own personality, their own responses to questions, after cleansing and connection it is important to get to know them. You may need to do this before every reading or session. Begin by sitting quietly, looping the chain of the pendulum over your finger, holding it between your thumb and forefinger, swinging freely.  Ask the pendulum to show you a 'Yes', this may be swinging back and forth, left and right, swinging clockwise or anticlockwise. Once it has shown you the answer, stop it from moving and then ask for a 'No' followed by a 'Maybe' to define your directional answers. 
 
Then you can begin asking your questions and getting responses. 
 
When working with deities, it is done in a similar way but you allow the spirit, deity, ancestor to work with you and your movements to gain answers.
